Journal Quilts - theme "Colours Of Africa"

"We enter into a covenant that we shall build a society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world."

from Nelson Mandela's Inaugural Address at Pretoria May 9, 1994.

The quote is the inspiration for one of the two journal quilts I made for the event "Colours of Africa", theme "Rainbow", which will take place on April 17 and 18 in 2010 at "De Oude Pastorij" in Essen, Belgium. The entries of all participants will be used to make three-dimensional art objects. The objects are going to be auctioned at the event. The money raised will be donated to the Chris Hani-crèche in Tulbagh, South Africa. Every Euro raised with the auction of the participants textile work, will be equalled by the Town Council of Essen.

Eye On Africa

Luckily the day of submitting the journals was extended from December 1 to December 10, so I could make one more quilt.
Inspired by the December month theme "Recycle" from Creative Every Day, I used part of a pre-study leftover from my African Equator quilt to make this:

stitches used: 036, 045 and 061 design inspirated by "African Equator"
