Festival of Quilts 2011

From 11th to 14th August the international Festival Of Quilts was held at the NEC in Birmingham (UK). Yesterday already I received my entry back with the Judge's Comments. I like to thank the judges for their ticks, especially in the excellent boxes:

Four seasons from a train window

From Four seasons from a train window

Being one of a group of four, I am proud to present this quilt, consisting of four panels made by the members of the group. It has been on display (no. 234 for the catalog owners) during the annual general exhibition of the Dutch Quiltersguild from September 10-15, 2010 in Deventer.

The quilt is inspired by the painting "From A Train Window" of the Dutch artist Rob Koenders and is constructed with his full consent.
From left to right the panels are:

• Spring by Carla
• Summer by me, Geni
• Autumn by Klaske
• Winter by Julie

Each member added something of herself by interpreting a season and by making a panel in her own choice of materials (click picture to enlarge):

I enjoyed making this group quilt, while stretching myself in working with other materials and techniques than I normally do.

Fair Days

From Quilt Exhibitions

On August 27 and 28 there will be Fair Days at the Stofmeid in Borger, the Netherlands.
For me it is exciting to know that three quilts of mine will be part of this excellent yearly event:

• African Equator
• Fun - Fetti
• Flora's Feathers

If the weather allows, these and a lot of other stunning quilts will be hanged in the beautiful garden.

You also can enjoy arts from India, several crafts, decorations with flowers and vegetables, sales of beads, jewelry, sunflowers and pumpkins.

Along with demonstrations of painting fabric, embroidery and sewing machines, teachers will present their

Journal Quilts - theme "Colours Of Africa"

"We enter into a covenant that we shall build a society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world."

from Nelson Mandela's Inaugural Address at Pretoria May 9, 1994.

The quote is the inspiration for one of the two journal quilts I made for the event "Colours of Africa", theme "Rainbow", which will take place on April 17 and 18 in 2010 at "De Oude Pastorij" in Essen, Belgium. The entries of all participants will be used to make three-dimensional art objects. The objects are going to be auctioned at the event. The money raised will be donated to the Chris Hani-crèche in Tulbagh, South Africa. Every Euro raised with the auction of the participants textile work, will be equalled by the Town Council of Essen.

Eye On Africa

Luckily the day of submitting the journals was extended from December 1 to December 10, so I could make one more quilt.
Inspired by the December month theme "Recycle" from Creative Every Day, I used part of a pre-study leftover from my African Equator quilt to make this:

stitches used: 036, 045 and 061 design inspirated by "African Equator"
