For the second time I am participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival 2009 - an online Quilt Festival being held from October 9th - 16th.

Bearing in mind it is Quilter's Choice, my entry for this Festival is a quilt I made in 2007 which gave and still gives me much happy hours. This quilt was submitted to a challenge called “Colours Of Africa”.
First I made a design in Electric Quilt:
The face or shield in the middle is done with paper-piecing.
I had to do the face twice, because I made the mistake to use different printers on both halves and one halve became longer then the other. The eyes I also did twice, because my youngest son (at that moment 17 years old) did not like the first pair.
The quilt was made from fabrics on sale I bought on-line.
The piecing and the quilting was done on a ordinary sewing machine with lesser fancy stitching than the one I own now, but could do some nice straight stitches: a Pfaff 1525 ClassicStyle.
For the right halve behind the face I used some neon coloured thread for quilting, so the quilting would pop-out more from a distance. I learned that from the website of Caryl Bryer Fallert.
The left halve of the background was an experiment with random cut stripes to resemble the landscape of savannas who are also a part of Africa.
The border on the bottom and at the right are made from log cabin blocks in diamant form, a form much used in African designs and also a much wanted mineral found in Africa.
The border on the left was inspired by the colourful and bold designs on African fabrics and is made from halve log cabin blocks.
The border on top, also made of blocks in diamant form, had to blend in with the backgrounds behind the face, to suggest a soft transition. I learned from Joen Wolfrom’s website where to look for in the fabrics to achieve this effect.
This quilt I called "African Equator" gave me the luck to be a first price visitors choice winner of the Challenge “Colours from Africa” during the second Main-Quilt Festival 2007 in Asschaffenburg, Germany:
The first price was a Bernina Aurora 440QE with BSR and lots of fancy stitches.
